is for Elliott

Elliott was one of the unfortunate casualties of divorce.  She had gotten him as a puppy and he was loved, cared for & had regular vet care for years.  Then she had to move somewhere where she could not take him so at the age of 11 (she told us he was 9), he came into rescue and into foster care during the cold, snowy Northeast winter of 2010.

Cindy, our rescue coordinator, retrieved Elliott from where he was staying with the owner’s relatives, groomed him and sought a foster home for him.  I immediately responded with the offer to take him.  Cindy described him as quite thin with a weak backend, but very developed shoulders – like two different dogs glued together.

When I got Elliott home, I was able to take a good look at him – very thin, yes.  He ate his food like he was starving – he’d put as much in his mouth as he could and just throw it down his throat, gagging.  He had just been groomed and felt clean & smelled fine but he had flakes galore, a hotspot on his tail, balding inner thighs.  My husband quickly gave him the nickname “Tinkertoy.”  He was very sweet – so sweet that my own dog Astro even liked him.

As the weeks went by, Elliott gained 10 pounds quickly and filled out nicely.  However, it became apparent that he had some thyroid imbalance.  He came with a bottle of medicine but no instructions.  I called the vet who dispensed the meds and she said to give him one a day.  After doing a lot of research on hypothyroidism, I determined that his flaking skin, greasy fur & bad odor were all related to the thyroid so we had him tested &

voila – his thyroid was very low and he needed almost double the amount of medicine he was prescribed.

With changes in food, adjustment in meds, probiotics, frequent baths & rinses & air fresheners, Elliott really started to come along.  He was happy and energetic finally! I was ready to tell Cindy that he was ready for adoption – just in time for our group’s annual “Aire Faire” where 100 of our former adopters would come for a picnic.  He needed to be seen – I just knew someone would adopt him there!   He was going to be the Grand Marshall of the rescue parade.  Then, just before the Faire, I was in a motorcycle accident and was very badly injured.  I was unable to give Elliott his important regular baths or even pick up a dog bowl.  I reluctantly called Cindy & Joey to tell them someone had to come get him for a few weeks until I recovered a bit.

Elliott’s New Beginning:

One day before the annual Airedale get-together at Joey's, we received a call from her asking if I could go to Deb's house and pick Elliott up and take him to Selbyville Delaware to Longvue Airedale Terriers so Elliott could stay there while Deb recovered from her accident.

I called Todd to ask if he could keep Elliott for awhile and he said certainly (they have never refused to help and never take anything for caring for the dogs).  However, Todd would not be around until after 2:00 pm, as it was Sunday.

I arrived early at Deb's house that day, and when I got near home, it was only a little after eleven so I decided to take Elliot home until time to take him to the kennel. My wife Pat & I where concerned about bringing him into the house, as Soldier has not gotten along with any other Airedale since we lost our Bubba & Anna.

We took Soldier and Elliott into the back yard to meet each other and then left them there, while we watched them closely. We then bought both of them into the house and everything was all right!

When two o'clock came around, Elliott did not go anywhere. He now is a member of our home, along with Soldier. The two Airedales like to entertain, their motto being “the more the merrier,” as we have had all the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren here at one time — and they enjoy it.

He likes to go for rides in the truck and he and Soldier seem to know they are going, because both start jumping around in anticipation. He likes to play with his toys and at night he likes to take them outside with him.

Pat watches the neighbors little boy who will be three and he likes to push his little train around the house and sometimes Elliott is standing on the tracks.  The boy tells Elliott,  “Get off the track, Big Dog!”  But Elliott is bigger than the train and has even derailed it. The boy is now re-routing the train.

Elliott has been to the vet and groomer since being here and has been no trouble at all. He is welcomed addition in our lives. We’ve tried to take pictures of the dogs, but when the camera comes out, the dogs become invisible.

From Elliott’s new Dad.
